Dr. Brian F. Gurley

Director of Music and Organist

Brian Gurley is Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a position he has held since 2013.  A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he earned his undergraduate degree in organ performance from Grove City College, where he studied with Dr. Richard Konzen.  Dr. Gurley pursued graduate studies in organ performance and liturgical theology at the University of Notre Dame, where he studied with Dr. Craig Cramer.  At Notre Dame, he was a graduate assistant for the University of Notre Dame Liturgical Choir, under the direction of the late Dr. Gail Walton.

 

Dr. Gurley pursued further studies in choral conducting and organ performance at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he studied with Prof. Beverly Taylor (conducting) and Dr. John Chappell Stowe (organ).  At Wisconsin, he was a Teaching Assistant in the School of Music from 2009–2011.  From 2011–2013, Dr. Gurley was the recipient of the Lorna Jorgensen Wendt Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship, an award given to outstanding doctoral students in choral conducting.  His doctoral research project focused on performance practice options for the polychoral works of Tomás Luis de Victoria.  From 2008–2013, Dr. Gurley served as Director of Music and Liturgy at Saint Christopher Parish in the Diocese of Madison, WI.

 

Dr. Gurley performs organ recitals on occasion, is an active member of the Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians, and participates in summer training courses of the Royal School of Church Music in America.

 

 

Mrs. Andrea Reno 

 

B.Mus., Temple University

 

Andrea Reno is the director of the Training Choir (the “Troubadours”) at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.  She holds a Bachelors of Music in Music Education/Voice, magna cum laude, from Temple University’s Boyer College of Music.  She sings locally with Albany Pro Musica and as a founding member of Mamacapella.  Prior to relocating to New York, Mrs. Reno taught vocal and general music in the Prince George’s County, Maryland and Washington, DC public schools from 2007-2011, working with students from preschool through 6th grade.  She was the founding director of the Greenbelt Elementary 3rd Grade Choir and the Hoyer Montessori Elementary Chorus. As a choral singer she has sung under the baton of notable conductors including: Helmuth Rilling, Ivan Fischar, Luis Biava, Craig Hella Johnson, and Alan Harler. She was as a choral scholar at the Berkshire Choral Festival (2006) and at CONCORA (CT Choral Artists) summer workshop (2002-2004), and a guest artist with the University of Maryland Concert Choir for performances at the Kennedy Center (2008 & 2009).  She has served as an active cantor at churches in her native CT, as well as in PA, DC, MD, and NY.  While a student at Temple University, she was the recipient of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association award for service and the SAI honor award for musicianship, scholarship, and service.
